MC Lars - Download This Song

Lyrics here

This is the music video for 'Download This Song' by MC Lars. The song itself uses Iggy Pop's 'The Passenger' throughout the song which I think is illustrative in itself of the song's message - that the music industry is changing/has changed dramatically in terms of distribution of the recent years. Using part of 'The Passenger' as an element to the song helps create the idea of us as consumers (as victims of push media in the past) have just been along for the ride concerning music in the past but now things are different with the invention of direct download and torrenting. Furthermore, the 'lala's created by the unison of voices also creates an image of a mass group backing the message of the song and this is illustrated in the video. We see multiple persons viewing music videos on various platforms such as phones and PSPs thereby illustrating the song's message of music revolution (hence the lyrics are very closely related to the video). Regarding the relationship between music and visuals, the editing is cut relatively rapid so as to fit with the beat of the song. An inter-textual reference of Star Wars is also made, referring to when Princess Leia is attempted to contact Obi-Wan Kenobi through a hologram which fits the lyric at this point - "Welcome to the future". The video is primarily dedicated to visualising the message of the song, but it also contains shots of MC Lars himself perhaps in an attempt to reveal/promote the artist.
